For a couple of years, Sierra Leone has lingered at the bottom of the per capita GNP list and has only recently been matched by former Zaire. This shows that civil war is as deadly to Africa as AIDS. Diamonds that should have made this beautiful country one of the richest in the region has been at the root of Sierra Leonean problems. Diamonds are powering the spiral of violence in which a handful of RUF rebels have grown in power via diamond trade. Sierra Leonean diamonds are also of interest to President Charles Taylor of Liberia who is said to have backed RUF and other rebel factions in a decade of civil war. The atrocities suffered by Sierra Leone populations are unspeakable yet little known to an average American or European. Literacy levels around 24%, few hundreds of physicians and a single university are far below what Sierra Leone deserves and needs to pull itself out of the present misery. This little collection provides most basic facts needed to understand today's Sierra Leone. It provides a historical background from the times of Portuguese settlers via British colony through independence until the 1996 presidential election. It lists major rebel forces, their leaders, major dates in the civil war and the background of the 1999 Lome Peace Accord. It also provides some important facts about the history of neighboring Liberia which may influence the present political situation in the country. Sierra Leone collection is recommended for those who study contemporary Africa. This country is a powerful case study for understanding violence and poverty in the African context. After a week of study, you will be able to read with understanding historical and contemporary reference materials relating to Sierra Leone.
